The
McKernon Group is a distributor for BuildBlock® insulating concrete
forms (ICFs) and has been using ICFs to build foundations and wall
systems since 1998. ICFs are lightweight Styrofoam forms that create
a cavity into which the concrete is poured and then stay in place
to produce a highly insulated concrete wall. The forms are similar
to blocks and they easily assemble like Legos®.
The versatility of BuildBlock makes it ideal for a variety of
uses below or above grade. With 2-1/2" of insulation on either
side of the wall, concrete can be poured well into the winter months
with the assurance that it will cure properly, protected from the
cold. Studies have shown that homes constructed entirely with BuildBlock
exterior wall systems can save 30% to 50% of their energy costs
for heating or cooling when compared to a wood framed house of
the same size.
The benefits of this type of construction are making ICFs the
fastest growing building material in the residential construction
market. Architectural details such as curves and arches are easily
accommodated with the BuildBlock system.
BuildBlock is eco-friendly: The energy savings result in less
carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere on an ongoing
basis. ICF blocks – especially BuildBlock ICFs – result
in less construction waste. BuildBlock ICFs contain no HCFC, formaldehyde,
asbestos, or fiberglass, and no harmful CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons)
are used in their manufacture, nor is there any degree of "off-gassing." Additionally,
all the construction waste is recyclable.
